Matching Grant Helps Baltimore Parents to Access Health, Nutrition Education

Funds Support Onsite Childcare for Single Mothers Attending Classes

BALTIMORE, MD, February 23, 2016 – Family League of Baltimore today announced that it has received a $15,000 matching grant to promote access to nutrition education, health, and wellness programs in some of Baltimore’s neediest communities, including Upton, Druid Heights, and Patterson Park North and East communities.

The matching funds are awarded jointly by the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America and a regional trade association, the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Beverage Association.

The grant funds onsite child care, which will enable more young mothers and others to attend nutrition and healthy cooking classes. Baltimore City’s Health Department calculates that the city has the state’s largest population of single mothers, the highest infant mortality rate, and the highest obesity rate among young women.

“These funds will go a long way to make it easier for single mothers and caregivers to acquire new skills that help them care for their families and develop healthy eating habits that benefit parents and children alike so all families can thrive,” said Jonathon Rondeau, president and CEO of Family League of Baltimore.

“This grant demonstrates our commitment to helping support nutrition education as part of achieving a balanced lifestyle,” said Ellen Valentino, executive vice president of the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Beverage Association. “Our industry has a long history of giving back to the communities in which we live, work and play, and we’re proud to help Family League of Baltimore extend its programming to those in some of Baltimore’s neediest communities.”
