You are the “Community” in Baltimore’s Community Schools!

Last October, Baltimore City Schools formally adopted a new regulation to strengthen the framework supporting our Community Schools and identify the best ways to collaborate going forward. This is a positive step in the right direction for current and future Community Schools. Family League is proud to join City Schools and the Mayor’s Office in this effort.

And now it’s your turn to weigh in!

The regulation calls for a Community School Steering Committee that includes 8 members drawn from our city neighborhoods.

Committee members will:

  • Help monitor school progress and effectiveness
  • Determine what Community Schools need to succeed
  • Collaborate to resolve conflicts and evaluate success
  • Strengthen and grow partnerships supporting children and families
  • Remove barriers to student success, regardless of zipcode.

Information and applications also available at our
Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:00 PM at Family League,

2305 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21218.

We’re “CHARM”ed to Meet You!

Six months from now, after more than a year of careful planning, development, and testing, we will unveil an innovative new web-based data management system-called charm®. All Community School Lead Agencies, Out-of-School Time partners, and organizations receiving funding for Parent Youth Empowerment Program, Children in Need of Supervision, and Youth Service Bureaus will use this new tool. (A big thank you to all our stakeholders who have provided expertise and perspective.)

We anticipate that charm® will streamline real-time data collection for our partners, help all of us to more accurately measure outcomes, and provide greater transparency and accountability related to our investments of city and state dollars. The initial training, roll-out and technical assistance comes your way in July.

Planning Grants Awarded to Strengthen School Climate Initiatives

Last December, we teamed up with the Baltimore School Climate Collaborative to offer small planning grants to help city public middle and high schools advance efforts to improve school climate. We have been working with the Collaborative for some time now to advocate for effective policies that result in students attending school every day and graduating prepared for college and career.

We’re pleased to announce that five organizations have been recommended to receive these grants:

  • City Neighbors High School
  • Digital Harbor High School
  • University of Maryland-Baltimore School of School Work Promise Heights, on behalf of Booker T. Washington Middle School
  • YMCA of Central Maryland on behalf of Forest Park High School
  • Foundation for Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women

Initially, these funded partners will develop and/or strengthen an active climate team and attend monthly professional development sessions. Thereafter, a new competitive process will begin to evaluate participants’ action plans, whereby those selected to move forward to implement their plans will be eligible to receive up to $9,000 in additional funds.

Support Family League

When all children in Baltimore grow up healthy, succeed academically, graduate high school and transition into higher education and the workforce our goal will be met. Until then, we must pull together our best thinking, our best talent and our collective resources to ensure that every child is provided an equal chance to reach their potential.

When you make a gift to the Family League of Baltimore, you help improve birth outcomes, kindergartner readiness and ensure that schools are safe and conducive for children to learn and grow. Family League has been a trusted community partner for more than 25 years. We ensure that the investments are made where they are needed and we are accountable to the community for results.

Please make your gift today. The children of Baltimore are counting on us.

Thank you.
