Family League Announces 34 City-Funded Awards to Continue, Expand Youth Programs in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, October 20, 2016—Family League today announced the award of more than $1.7 million in city funds for 34 out-of-school-time (OST) programs that will serve 1,000 children and youths in Baltimore. These investments are a portion of funds to be awarded from $3.08 million allocated to Family League specifically for youth programming through the city’s FY2017 budget process (which allocates other funds to Family League as well). The funds enable community-based organizations to initiate or continue programs serving K-8 youth, high school youth, and youths facing special challenges (e.g., refugee status, encounters with the juvenile justice system, and youths with disabilities). All of the funded programs operate in underserved communities, including Sandtown-Winchester, Harlem Park, Penn North, Southern Park Heights, and elsewhere.

“Family League is grateful to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore for their steadfast commitment to helping children and youths in Baltimore achieve their true potential and envision a bright future,” said Family President and CEO Jonathon Rondeau. “These funds enable us to continue as well as expand access to safe, enriching, and fun activities for students of all ages, from STEM programs to arts and athletics. Equally important are programs for high school youths focused on preventing youth violence, creating pathways to college and career, and providing mentors. And with the continued inclusion of programs for youths facing special challenges, we’re taking care to offer a broad range of opportunities.”

The $3.08 million in city funds allocated to Family League in FY2017 for youth programming marks a continuation of funding for this purpose. In FY2016, the city allocated $3.15 million to Family League for OST programs at Community Schools and other neighborhood facilities. In both years, a significant portion of funds go to small, grassroots organizations with budgets under $1 million, as well as organizations that are new to Family League—thus diversifying the pool of service providers and communities served.
